Ching Shih (1775-1844) was a powerful pirate who ran what’s known as the Red Flag Fleet and evaded the Chinese government for decades. She commanded over 300 ships and 20,000 pirates, eventually surrendering herself in her older age for a lump sum of money. She negotiated so that she and her troops could keep the treasure they had earned and walk away unscathed, and she even used her reward money to open a gambling casino, which ran until her passing. A brilliant woman with a fiery reign and a fragrance to do her justice.
