Sada is the Japanese word for purity or chasteness, and Blanc Sada from L’Entropiste uses an achingly beautiful palette of achromatic notes to create a delicate homage to the mysterious geisha. Now more tourist curiosity than the provocative ciphers of an older, more tradition-bound Japan. This is reflected in a ghostly perfume that decorates the skin like fine alabaster powder. The elegant simplicity of sliding shoji is suggested and inherent with that, the diffusive light created by the traditional screens.

Blanc Sada is a fragile study of purity in white, of the traditional geisha, and oshiro, the mix of pale white rice powder and water applied over an oil-based foundation called Bintsuke-abura. This whiteness, contrasted with the elaborate black hair styles and blood-red doll lips was designed to make the ornately painted skin seem more ethereal in pre-electricity candle and lantern light as geishas performed their rigidly controlled roles. The alabaster skin was symbolic of unattainable beauty, human dolls that shimmered in the night.

A hint of juicy lychee brightens the rice top notes with sparkling aldehydes, settling into a sly straw tatami accord, aloof iris and a gasp of delicious white musks in the base. Everything about Blanc Sada is about skin, the nature of its properties, in shadow or illuminated in close rooms. The fragile grace of its snowy milk musks make it at once sensual and ephemeral, a memory of a memory.
