L'EAU DES IMMORTELS

L'EAU DES IMMORTELS
EAU DE PARFUM
This punning title, a play on immortal and immortelle, is a pungent, golden blend of fragrant elemi resin, benzoin, labdanum and of course a generous dose of immortelle or helichrysum. Amber and bergamot work together beautifully, creating a bright lacquering effect flecked with gold.
This is a tinder dry perfume, reminiscent of scorched vegetation, the legendary Maquis of the southern mediterranean, a torrid composition of flayed sweetness that might ignite at any moment. In fact, Amyris, which produces the elemi resin is sometimes referred to as torchwood, as the sap and exudation are highly flammable and have been known to spontaneously combust and burn for hours.
It is the immortelle with its off-kilter floral sweetness and curried liquorice scent that defines Eau des Immortels, oscillating as it does between singed gorse, cumin and tobacco-tinted vanilla.
The perfume smells volatile, tension between the resins and charismatic immortelle plays out gently but resonantly. There is a key base note of chocolate, which serves to hold everything together, a dark cocoa mood under the panoply of resins. It resembles a sweeter, more suggestive patchouli and as the perfume develops, asserts itself beautifully with the savoury smoulder of the immortelle.
Eau des Immortels is a picturesque, jazzy riff on a familiar, some say divisive material, but it is further proof that Camille Goutal and Isabelle Doyen have a profound understanding of natural materials and work olfactive magic.
