The narcissus absolute familiar to perfumery, which is dense, green and earthy bears little resemblance to the flower in bloom. The living scent of narcissus is something else entirely: the softness of white florals, a pronounced indolic warmth and a vivid, sappy greenness that fills a room. One is a material. The other is an atmosphere. With Wild Narcissus, Aromag set out to capture the atmosphere.

In the spring of 2025, Aromag brought a pot of Narcissus tazetta var. chinensis, grown over two months and in full bloom, into the Symrise laboratory in Shanghai. Using Headspace technology, the scent of the narcissus was recorded at the moment of flowering and reconstructed from that trace. This method traces the flower's presence in the air, creating a faithful snapshot of the atmosphere of the bloom.

Narcissus tazetta var. chinensis is believed to have reached China through maritime trade during the Tang-Song period (7th–13th century) and was subsequently cultivated in southern Fujian, where distinct local forms were established over centuries. In China, narcissus is known as 水仙 (shuǐxiān), the water fairy, and Wild Narcissus carries the full name 野水仙 (yě shuǐxiān), meaning wild water fairy. Traditionally cultivated in shallow dishes of water and pebbles to bloom in time for the New Year, it is bound to the turning of the year, to these quiet arrangements, and to a continuity of scent that has passed through generations.

With Wild Narcissus, perfumer Florent di Marino gently extended the feeling of early spring. Galbanum and celery seed bring a vegetal, freshly cut greenness close to the snap of a stem. A touch of frankincense introduces a quiet spice, giving dimension to the green. Jasmine and ylang-ylang round out the body of white florals. At the base, myrrh and patchouli lengthen the fragrance, adding depth without obscuring the flower itself.

From beginning to end, the composition remains centred on a single idea: a narcissus in bloom. For a long time, narcissus belonged to the water's edge. With Wild Narcissus, Aromag has joyfully brought it into air.
