Mother’s Milk, the latest launch from Eris Perfumes is a disquieting and hauntingly beautiful gourmand perfume. Created by Master Perfumer Antoine Lie and Eris Artistic Director and perfume historian Barbara Herman, it is an unsettling yet compulsive study of our associated emotional responses to the concept and interpretations of mother and motherhood.
The phrase Mother’s Milk is loaded with beauty, safety and natural maternal power. Most people agree that breastfeeding creates a vital psychological and physical bond between mother and child. Nutrients, antibodies, comfort and security are passed on. It is a primal channelling of nourishment, protection, love and fear.
Motherhood is eternally under attack, mostly at the hands of the patriarchy and religious zealots who want to control the female body using foetus rights as an excuse. The very cradle of existence, the natural cycle of motherhood, something that should be protected and celebrated has been corrupted by brutal interference, skewed laws and the implied mindset that women are incapable of making decisions regarding their own bodies. The shockingly prescient The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood originally published in 1985 showed us the world we have now in many places.
It is a strange thought that perfumery might strive to encapsulate such a vast arena of emotions, but then Antoine Lie is not exactly a conventional perfumer and Barbara has a scrupulous eye for historical detail. She makes us aware that while the history and development of perfume has been millennia in the making, what is often seen as mere adornment or beautification has in fact been loaded with coded symbolism. Sexuality, power, weapon, ritual and identity. All reflected in composition and design.
Mother’s Milk is a subversive adult lullaby, presenting as something gentle, soothing and nostalgic, all the while concealing the latent transgression of a transparent trojan horse. White and pale pink, malleable purity, suggestively unsettled by the insertion of a bitter, animalic suede note that oscillates between velveteen nap and musky interference. Mother’s Milk is dazzling gourmand work, in fact it feels like something new, the delicious nostalgia of mother and baby, milk and vanilla, talcum, baby oil and barrier creams.
The delicate faded pink hue of the juice suggests pastel tea roses blanching before they fall to the ground. A Virgin Suicides bedroom with scattered baby pink and ivory Lisbon sister detritus. But Mother’s Milk invites a deeper dive than most perfumes. It is the inclusion of a buttery orris note derived from the precious rhizomes of Bavarian iris that transmutes Mother’s Milk into a perfume of celestial fascination and violaceous romance.
The addictive nostalgia of hot milk, orris, blushing rose is good mother, baby’s head, comfort, refuge and memories of innocence. Lie then introduces a darkened animalic suede note, supple and subversive, a deliberate shadow cast through the pervasive lacteous solace. This suggestion that motherhood is not all perfection or even appreciated, that disturbance is internal and external, the sly woody suede works in perfect disharmony with the silvered orris and poignant milky vanilla.
Mother’s Milk is an exceptionally beautiful perfume, Barbara Herman and Antoine continue to offer us unique compositions and sensual anomalies that we have no idea we need until we inhale them and craving kicks in. Each perfume to date has been distinguished by imagination and the duo’s exploration of past perfume tropes and exploding them with contemporary virtuosity and technological elan.
It is hard to shake the mood and beauty of Mother’s Milk, an atmospheric and shifting land of mothers, followed by a silhouette of disquiet, walking through the comfort.
