破茧 | breaking the cocoon.
“Every time I see you, my heart feels so peaceful.”
The idea came from David Tao's song Butterfly, and from a night under the Sha Xi stars: the longing to be quietly alone like that, and at the same time the wish to step out and become a child of nature. If Talking To The Moon is about confronting death, Let Me Out is the hope of rebirth. “I can live again, I can regain my courage; your love is like oxygen aiding my breath, allowing me to breathe once more.”
The perfumer built an inner cocoon first, from labdanum, fermented wool and an orris absolute containing 85% irone. He calls that stage “Leave Me Alone”. Then he opened a gap in it with clove bud, perilla and turmeric leaf, and accented the opening with Bulgarian white rose.
It places you in the position of a butterfly just emerged, still struggling to spread its wings, antennae faintly perceiving the endless grassland, the sky and the earth. Invisible, but known.
Perilla. A highlight of Asian cooking and almost unused in perfumery. It smells like a zesty, moist blend of cumin and green peach.
Wool absolute. A rare natural animal material, bringing a vivid fermentation note.
White rose. Bulgaria's most valuable variety, less sweet and heavy than damask, with a freshness to it like a pear had been added to the rose.
