Eau de Parfum

Wild Garlic is a provocative name for a fragrance. Many will immediately conjure the pervasive, thickly green odour of allium ursinum, the botanical name for wild garlic, growing by rivers and under trees in distinctively pungent mini forests. The smell is unmistakable, the pungent foliage and flowers used in a variety of cuisine, not least the redolent, palate-flooding pesto often made by serious foragers.

Wild Garlic does not smell like its heady inspiration, but a strange phantom of recognition roams through Dominique Ropion's fascinating composition, playing with our expectations and scent memories.

The initial opening of Wild Garlic is a shock, a spacious blast of crystal clear jade light, like walking into a vast cold Victorian-style greenhouse, chill winter sun bouncing off glass panes and stone, surrounded by an array of buds, stalks, leaves, flowers, potting compost, twine and a mix of oiled and rusted tools.

Ropion has composed an acerbic maelstrom of verdure, mingling vegetal wonder, tomato leaf, moist celery, lavender, and the pissy feral allure of blackcurrant leaves, dirty and astringent. Shiso leaf is allied to the woody orange of petitgrain, allowing the sweet basil mintiness of the shiso leaf to work its unique beauty.

There is no trace of actual garlicky greenness, but Ropion's inventive concept scent is witty, immediate and gloriously addictive, confounding the senses and demonstrating verve and vision.
