NEELA VERMEIRE CRÉATIONS

TRAYEE

Eau de Parfum

Trayee (pronounced Try-ee), launched in 2012 is one of the original Neela Vermeire Creations. It is a smoky, bittersweet collage of herbs, vetiver, white flowers, and carefully calibrated spices inspired by the Vedic era and the holistic approach to seeking balance between physical existence, mental existence, and personality. This triptych of bodily and psychological demarcation is a key part of Ayurvedic medicine, a set of spiritual beliefs dating back centuries.

The Vedas are a sprawling intrinsic part of Indian faith history, composed between 1750–500 BCE; a set of religious hymns, verse, prayers, and liturgical compositions written in ancient Sanskrit. Orally passed down through generations, memorised using the mnemonic techniques. They are among the earliest known Hindu writings. The influence of the Vedas on Indian history, culture and medicine is profound and the intrinsic belief that wisdom is eternal.

Trayee means triad, or three, referring to the first three Vedas: Rig, Yajur, and Sana. The perfume contains a high percentage of natural oils reflecting the levels of natural materials used in Ayurvedic medicine. At the top of Trayee, a mix of blue ginger, cinnamon bark and blackcurrant that smells a little like sweet tar and crushed lemons. Marijuana is used in ayurvedic medicines and its distinctive diesel skunkiness exhales through Trayee, more pungent at the beginning and softening as the composition dries down.

As with all the NVC perfumes the hearts throbs with white flowers, in this case, jasmine sambac and Egyptian jasmine, harvested in moonlight to avoid the heat of the day.

Duchaufour's Ganga accord imparts a sensual dirtiness with the jasmine buds giving a greener, washed aspect that counterpoint a generous dose of cardamom, earthy saffron and a lovely, lacteous sandalwood.

With these NVC creations, Neela and Bertrand demonstrate how incredibly beautiful the use of pungent spices can be when calibrated with delicacy and an understanding of how they compliment, exalt and in some cases contrast with the materials around them.

Everything leads to base notes, evoking a sacred space, murmuring with low prayer, and lit with the steady flames of undisturbed candles. Oudh Palao, bitter memorial myrrh and smouldering woods.

In less capable hands, Trayee could have been a generic oudh, but the transformation from citrus piquancy with ivory indoles, into a smoke and spice base is just so elegantly addictive.
