Ching Shih was a notorious Chinese pirate queen operating in the early 1800s. Born into poverty, she was working as a sex worker when she married the pirate leader of the Red Flag Fleet. When he died, she inherited approximately 1,800 ships and 80,000 pirate crew. Eventually surrendering to the authorities, Ching Shih struck a deal that would allow her and her men to disband, and surrender weapons. Her surrender also permitted an avoidance of punishment and the pirates were allowed to retain the booty they had accumulated.

Marissa’s Ching Shih perfume has a potent and piquant start, an atmospheric mix of what smells like fennel seed, star anise and fenugreek. It is a beautiful masala, with green undertones of cardamom style oiliness and a weird hint of wild garlic. Orris and incense, powder and smoke rise with conviction and presence, further exalting the pungent spices. A pirate reference of gunpowder, explodes with a muffled boom, sparking and billowing around mournful myrrh.
