Carlos Benaim is a respected and very gifted perfumer; the trio of perfumes - Dawn, Music for a While and Eau de Magnolia - that he composed for Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle are sensual and exquisitely assembled. He understands the demands and nuances of working with floral materials and Magnolia de Bleu for Aromag is exceptional and eccentric, a shifting portrait of a memory flower that smells like souvenirs of love.

The heart of the perfume is a white Champaca called Michelia x Alba (from Laboratoires Monique Rémy), grown in Guangxi in China. It has a gorgeous ivory cream floral personality with delicate green edges and hints of underripe fruit. It is intensely fragrant and Indonesian wedding garlands are traditionally a mingle of white Champaca and jasmine. The flowers are used to make Yulang tea, the tea leaves dried between layers of magnolia flowers.

Simultaneously a portrait of magnolia in full bloom, but also an exercise in the sensual diffusion of a particular alabaster radiance. Sometimes that radiance seems almost washed with pale blue, such is the intensity of this skyful of blooms.

There is a delicious poignancy in the interplay between the floral heart and the bright blush of citrus and rhubarb in the opening notes. Rhubarb is a unique scent, mixing green astringency with rubicund juiciness. The red and green pairing gently but effectively prevents any potential cloying of the magnolia and jasmine. Ultimately it is Carlos Benaim's swell of dreamy magnolia that will have you returning over and over to your skin, a beautiful thing, both photorealistic and the stuff of aphrodisiac dreams.
