Humble House is the portrait of a secluded quiet dwelling, its hushed presence moving back and forth in time, moss on stone walls, slate roof green with age and muzzy ghosts stepping over a worn, indented door sill. A scholar's retreat with whispering scrolls and pages, celebrating the solitary nature of writing reflected in the beautiful assembly of papyrus, mastic and aromatic cypress.

The remains of a writing desk crumble below a blind window. The wall outside is overrun with ivy and tangled blackcurrant stems studded with ripening berries. Black-red plump acerbity lit by glimpses of narcotic narcissus.

Humble is an odd word, to some atmospheric and charming, implying quiet charms, unobtrusive presence, but to others it can be pejorative, meaning meek, ignoble and unassertive. Here it has been used by Nicolas Beaulieu to convey quietude, the often beautiful simplicity in unassuming forms and thoughts, made more beautiful still by the disarming subtlety of their presentation, mood and olfactive architecture.

A humid flurry of fern leaves and the herbal celery muskiness of angelica root add to the ambience of Humble House's fantasy surround. There is a distinctive odour of cool moss in the base that develops into a ghostly signature note, aided by the anisic curiosity of lentisque or mastic as it is sometimes known, valued for its spiky, clear resinous profile and excellent fixative properties.

There is such beautiful charisma and allure to Humble House. Perfumes this evocative are rare and Aromag and Nicolas Beaulieu have created an extraordinary composition, capturing the time passed after our scholar has tidied away his writings, walked out of the door and simply vanished.
