monto'ac
EAU DE PARFUM
The name comes from the Croatian dialect of the Carolina Algonquians meaning, Great Spirit. Monto’ac is inspired by smudging, the purification and spiritual cleansing rituals of many First Nation North American peoples, involving the burning of herbs and woods. The smoke is used to penetrate the psyche, the air and carry away any bad resonances. This reflects the original etymology of perfume, per fumum, meaning through smoke.
Monto’ac opens appropriately on a wondrous whoosh of purifying silver sage, one of the omni-present materials in smudging bundles. Sage is a strange botanical, soapy, spicy, charred and slippery. One of the most distinctive herbs in a garden, care must be taken when cooking with, like rosemary it can overwhelm a meal. Yet this overdose is exactly what is required in smudging, a pungent sense of smoke penetrating the very molecules and chasing away ill-will through blessing and cleansing.
A note of muscadine grapes, an American juicy robust variety is an unusual addition, lending grassy rhubarb and Verdejo wine nuances to the composition. This subtle tartness is fumed with green tobacco, quite different from the regular variety, imparting a subtle odour of tomato leaf that works beautifully with the grapes and sage. Oakmoss and a supple suede effect smooth out a haunting drydown with careworn musks stretching Monto’ac through soothed senses.
