This scent is the epitome of storm. Everything about it trembles with an uneasy presage of shattering tempest punctuated by those eerie lulls where everything seems to drop to the ground in waiting to speak to rain. Storms have odours. All over the world, cloudbursts, cyclones, squalls and windstorms have an atmospheric and dazzling range of associated smells.

Ki’lei is the immersive perfume of a sudden storm ravishing fir trees, thrashed needles and damp soil hurling scent into the molecules of electrified air.

Ki’lei means cloud in the Yawelmani dialect of Central California and while the idea of clouds having scent is a supremely abstract concept, it is the implied and imaginative idea of texture, surround and experience that matters. How we think different clouds might smell. The glowering, low-darkness of storm clouds are atramentally beautiful, sometimes sudden, skies blackening in a heartbeat or a glow mustering of greys as the air dampens.

Many animals sense storms before humans, we probably could at one time, but like so many primal abilities we once needed, such gifts have been lost to evolving time.

The silver fir note in Ki’lei is redolent with poetic verdancy, the green of it cool and comforting. Pine and fir tree forests have a unique quietude, a softness that embraces. The ground is gentle underfoot and every movement made produces an opposing olfactive reaction. Rosemary, the scent of remembrance, black pepper, cold smoke and the Argentine lustre of metallic aldehydes add to the wild time-capsule of mountainous forests.

What makes Ki’lei so intriguing is the shift three quarters of the way in as the pungent odours of loamy earth rise like fumes from smouldering underworld. Reminiscent of geosmin and freshly turned over beets, it is the perfect finale to electrified skin weather.
