SONGE DE TAGETE

Limited Edition Parfum

A Dream of Marigolds. Songe de Tagete feels like a reflective companion piece to an earlier Sentire X Sainte Cellier perfume, Songe de Narcisse, both of them intensively detailed and revelatory. If you remove the ‘e’ and leave Song of … Marigolds it would reflect the gorgeous choral canon of materials that perfumer Nata Dyshliuk has composed into a scent of tremulous arid beauty.

Tagetes, known as cempasúchil, or flowers of the dead, are native to Mexico and other Latin American countries. This fierce new perfume gives centre stage to one of perfumery’s unsung flowers. We often think of them as marigolds, the name deriving from Mary’s Gold, due to the often intensely golden pompom blooms that also come in yellow, vivid orange and white.

Unusually the pungent scent of tagetes is present in both flowers and foliage. Their solar ubiquity during the Mexican Dia de al Muertos celebrations is an indication of their important symbolism (flowers as golden as sun ) and the scent of flowers and stems, strong enough to entice and guide the souls of the dead. Houses, doorways, graves, cemetery paths and family altars are decorated riotously with tagetes and the air is saturated with a musky green miasma.

In Songe de Tagete, the striking perfume of the plant is enhanced by the smoky capsicum odour of galbanum resin and bitter-jade blackcurrant leaf. Tagetes can have a complex array of facets, very much dependent on our familiarity with smelling the flowers and foliage. It can present as piquant and sweetly fumed, with cannabis and herbal facets. Galbanum is a tenacious head note that develops throughout compositions. Nata has added the white cleanliness of lily of the valley and a soft iris to cushion and float the marigold into a base of rooty vetiver, musky ambrette and a moist scrunch of oakmoss.

Everything comes together with beguiling beauty. There is floral enigma and musky overload, a smeared vintage echo of ruthless chypré tailoring. At once a hymn to an oft-neglected flower and a perfume of potent ambition, Songe de Tagete is a dream of exhilarating gardens, redolent with sensual song.
