The arresting odour of mitti attar, petrichor personified, features again in Studio Tanaïs' Nymphea. Mitti attar is created in hydro-distillation stills by mixing dry clay into a base of sandalwood oil, producing the magical, intensely aromatic scent of monsoon rain falling on parched earth. A Tanaïs signature note, it winds through the compositions like a monsoon serpent. The concept of rain-triggered, clay-tinted odour is deeply ingrained in our memory, a scent we seem to instinctively understand on a primal level.

Nymphea is a surreal, almost alien floral, a sacred raft of odours offering prayers and thanks, lit by candles, channelling heartfelt centuries of ritual. At its heart are three sacred lotuses: blue lotus, with an aquatic and grassy scent profile bright with hints of unripe melon and guava; white lotus, gentler, more aerated and gauzier; and pink lotus wax, more pollen-dusted and waxen. The delicate floral facets develop slowly with just the right amount of transparent vegetal muskiness.

The monsoon vibe of mitti attar hits parched ground as the heart of Nymphea blooms with the vastness of river water, tidal flats and silt. Bangladeshi sandalwood and sea salt complete the tidal meeting of fresh and sea water where the Ganges reaches the Bay of Bengal. The sacred lotuses are gently washed out into a waiting ocean, carrying dreams, prayers and celebrations. The silent flowers adrift on water spin gently, water lapping at petals. All this has been conjured by Tanaïs, making Nymphea fascinating to experience on skin.
