This rococo-inspired perfume shimmers with playful seduction, erotic frivolity embroidered with powdered insouciance and giddy Versailles cosplay. Dauphine is a sublime homage to Marie Antoinette, the doomed Austrian-born queen married to Louis XVI, whose decorative lives played out in opulence and ignorance and ended on the guillotine during the bloody carnage of the French Revolution. Loved and loathed in equal measure, she was someone who even now causes heated debate. Her enclosed existence at Versailles unfolded in a succession of artificial gardens, role-playing, balls, perfume, affairs, jewels and extraordinary fashion.
Scent played an important role in the life of the Queen, she used a perfumer called Jean-Louis Fargeon who created flower-centric compositions for her, a huge departure from the heavier musk and attar based compositions that had held sway for centuries. The coquettish whimsy that soundtracks Dauphine is its beguiling strength.
Dauphine is floated on a silken ribboning of pastel-mood lilacs, hints of almond, jasmine and cut cucumber. Always thought of the essential scent of Spring, the dense honey-tinted panicles exuding a pungent unique perfume. Marie Antoinette had a passion for pastel colours, a fashion that hugely influenced the fickle royal court. So, this lilac note is a perfect theme, complimented by a blush of apricot and just the right amount of bittersweet bergamot. Clove exalts the lilac and ambrette brings powdered musky romance. A delicious hush of satin musks drape delicately over the perfume, enhancing and prolonging the rococo beauty of this most singular scent.
