Inky liquorice, bitter wormwood, scraped lichen, dirty flowers, herbs and the black-eyed hex of belladonna and black hemlock. A loamy essay in perfumed darkness. Midnight burials, entheogenic visions and the delicious euphoria of night flight.
The word Hexensalbe means Witches’ Salve or Flying Ointment, a toxic concoction of deadly flora thought to be smeared suggestively on broomsticks and applied transdermally. Containing ingredients like belladonna, mandrake, henbane and jimson weed, the salve caused psychotropic trips due to the atropine and scopolamine present in many of the materials.
Hexensalbe from Stora Skuggan is beautifully disturbing, inspired by this most bizarre mix of deliriants. The perfume is dominated by a chthonic liquorice note dusted with salt, a reference to Salmiaklakrits, a hugely popular form of black liquorice flavoured and sometimes dusted with bitter Salmiak salt.
Rosemary adds a metallic edge, while the musky pepper of angelica, woody lichen and an erotic taint of tuberose create an array of reflective effects. Deadly Nightshade (Atropa Bella-Donna) and black hemlock, allied with the bitter absinthe nuances of Wormwood reference the hallucinogenic Salve.
On skin, it is both macabre and poignant with a slow glassy fade. A scent of occult euphoria and delirious comedown.
