FAQ

What are conceptual or abstract perfumes?

Conceptual or abstract perfumes are fragrances that prioritise ideas, moods or artistic intention over traditional note structures. Instead of focusing on recognisable ingredients like florals, fruits or spices, these compositions aim to evoke atmosphere, texture or emotion. They might explore themes such as light and shadow, metallic surfaces, imagined landscapes or psychological states.

Conceptual scents often blur the line between perfume and art, inviting the wearer to interpret them rather than simply recognise familiar notes.

How to layer colognes to create unique fragrances?

Layering scents does not create a new fragrance in the technical or chemical sense. Each perfume remains structurally unchanged. What layering can create is a unique ambience on the skin, a combination of separate compositions that mingle in the air rather than fuse into a new formula.

For those who enjoy layering, the most successful combinations tend to come from pairing fragrances with compatible tones or shared textures, such as a sheer woody scent under a mineral composition or a soft musk beneath an abstract floral. Apply sparingly and allow each perfume to settle before adding another so that the final effect feels intentional rather than overwhelming.

Layering can be a creative way to personalise how your fragrances are experienced, but it does not alter the internal structure of the perfumes themselves.

Are artistic perfumes more niche or experimental?

The term “niche” originally referred to perfumes created outside the mainstream, often by small houses that prioritised artistic direction over mass appeal. In this sense, niche fragrances occupy a deliberately smaller space, shaped by creativity, distinctiveness and point of view rather than commercial trends.

Artistic or conceptual perfumes often fall within this definition because they explore ideas, moods or structures that are not designed for universal appeal. They may be experimental, but the intention is expression rather than obscurity. Their wearability depends less on how unusual the idea is and more on the technical structure of the fragrance itself. A conceptual perfume rendered as a soft whisper can feel intimate and effortless, while one built with bold, high-projection materials may feel more challenging or dramatic on the skin.

In other words, their difference lies in purpose and construction rather than difficulty. Conceptual perfumes offer an alternative to traditional perfumery through imagination, perspective and craft, and many are beautifully wearable in everyday life.

Can I sample conceptual fragrances before purchasing?

Yes. Most conceptual and abstract perfumes available at Sainte Cellier are offered as individual 2 ml hand-poured samples. Because these fragrances rely on mood and interpretation, sampling is the best way to understand how a composition behaves on your skin and whether the concept resonates with you.

Can I return a perfume if I don't like the scent?

Perfume is considered a hygiene-sensitive item, and under UK Consumer Contracts Regulations it cannot be returned once opened. This applies whether the product is wrapped in cellophane, sealed with a sticker, or simply packaged in a way that makes clear it is unused. Once a fragrance has been opened, sprayed or handled beyond inspection, it cannot be resold and is therefore not eligible for return based on personal preference.

If you would like to explore a scent before committing to a full-size bottle, I offer individually hand-poured samples so you can experience how it develops on your own skin.

Unopened perfumes may be eligible for return within the statutory period, and I am always here to help if an order arrives damaged, faulty or incorrect. Please contact me at bb@saintecellier.com for assistance.

How long does delivery take for these perfumes?

Orders are prepared by hand, and dispatch usually takes between three and five working days depending on what the order contains. Samples are hand-poured in small batches, which can take additional time.

Within the UK, orders are sent with Royal Mail using tracked services. Most parcels travel on the Tracked 48 service, although special arrangements can be made on request and may incur a surcharge.

International orders, including samples, are shipped with FedEx. Delivery times vary depending on destination and customs processing.
