島國 island nation. 酥 a crumbly pastry. Pineapple cake - 鳳梨酥, fenglisu - is Taiwan's most iconic souvenir, a buttery, crumbly shortcrust filled with sweet-tart pineapple jam. In Taiwanese Hokkien, the word for pineapple is "ong-lai," which sounds like a phrase meaning "prosperity arrives," making pineapple cakes the traditional gift for weddings, New Year celebrations and homecomings.
For a brand named after the act of bringing something home for the people who didn't travel, this fragrance could not be more fitting.
Perfumer Kaiwei Hsieh has captured the golden warmth of the pastry itself. Golden Diamond Pineapple, a prized Taiwanese cultivar, opens with bright, sun-drenched sweetness. Butter and sweet orange build the rich, crumbly warmth of the pastry crust, while vanilla settles the composition into something tender and familiar.
Island Crumb is the scent of a box being opened at a kitchen table. The gift unwrapped. Prosperity arrived.
