The work of Henri Le Douanier Rosseau is instantly recognisable, a self-taught painter whose strange dark jungle foliage, wild beasts, mysterious faces and sense of suspended predation are now considered masterpieces, but during his lifetime were often derided by critics and fellow artists alike. However, his work seems eerie and psychologically rich, unsettling and dreamlike. Enigmatic works like The Snakecharmer reek of lush disturbance and profound experience.

Julie Barretta subconsciously conjures startling echoes of Rousseau’s world with the lush mesmerising Fauve Evertue, while at the same time creating an immersive world of jungle greens, rain, broken foliage, mulched leaf matter and the unsettling bitter scent of hot insect thoraxes.

Fauve Evertue is further proof, if needed of Julie’s unique olfactive gift, she is a creatrix of strange worlds perfumed with uncharted weather. A powdered herbal opens the scent, like the humid undergrowth exuding its odours after a thunderous storm. There is a metallic tang, something sharp and electrified as the hypnotic gloss of wild foliage drips ionised water.

The perfume has a disturbed quality, as if wearing exalts a pause in the endless cycle of weather. Deep within Fauve Évertue is something dark and roasted, an earthy bitterness mulched into humid undergrowth, pitted and churned by storms. Seeds split and shoots reach from shadows toward sunlight granted by the shimmering canopy above. A magical, singular perfume, composed with immense subtlety and skill, Fauve Evertue smells unknown and knowing simultaneously, blending lush realism and that Rousseau depiction of viridity and eldritch power.
