If I had to choose one word to describe Frassaï’s latest fragrance, Ajedrez, it would be ‘cool’. It confidently hums with the debonaire chic of Old Hollywood heartthrobs like Cary Grant and the icy grace of Hitchcock blondes. Ajedrez’s name, which translates to ‘chess’, which calls to mind that achingly stylish, simmering chess match between Faye Dunaway and Steven McQueen in 1968’s The Thomas Crown Affair.
Like many of the Frassaï fragrances, Ajedrez possesses a sense of well-tailored restraint. Its central spine of orris sparkles with dry, crackling spices, the sensual polish of labdanum on a shiver of moss.
