Rose en Feu is the work of Jean-Louis Sieuzac, one of the most celebrated perfumers of the twentieth century and the nose behind Bel Ami for Hermès, Sagamore for Lancôme and part of the team that created the original legendary Opium for Yves Saint Laurent in 1977.

In keeping with its fiery name, this is a huge petrolic rose, carmine petals on fire with the stygian burn of cypriol, sometimes known as nagarmotha. The tarred and singed woodiness of cypriol has a sensational ignition as Rose en Feu hits skin, beautifully enhanced by cardamom, cinnamon and cypress with the mulched scent of conifers.

Sieuzac has built Rose en Feu around a dramatic conflagration of rose that smells of lightning-struck dark red roses while at the same time wearing on the skin like the finest gossamer silk. Fire can be cleansing, voracious, dangerous, but can also make way for change and transformation. The aftermath of forest and scrub burning may seem violent but through ash and cindered wood, seeds reach again for the sun. There is a sense of watching a Dutch still life of tousled blooms on fire in a darkened gallery.

The masala of spices, smoke woods and the bridging beauty of fragrant elemi resin create a beguiling setting for the Turkish rose; this in turn transitions smoothly into a base of vetiver, frankincense and an earthy patchouli. Tendrils of green smoke spiral upwards, enriching the singed curl of rose petals.
