温柔的狮 | the gentle lion.

On a private journey across the Serengeti, the perfumer watched a lion wake from a nap. The languid yawn, the bloody jaws opening. The vibration it set off in him was instinctive, and only a perfume could hold it.

Set beside the proud and solitary lion, he argues, human beings are closer to blindly conforming gnus. Yet we call ourselves kings, while barely noticing what we do to the world. Gentle King is a tribute to the prairie lions, and an act of genuine reverence.

Sunlight crosses the skyline of a boundless plain: that is the first impression. Aldehyde dances with black and Sichuan pepper to lift an abundance of hay, while blackcurrant carries something tropical into the vastness. As the head subsides the lion itself becomes the subject. A projection of the perfumer, gentleness and wildness at once. Violet leaf, iris and tonka bean speak a neutral softness; the base unfolds a royal fortitude of leather and animalic Indonesian oud.


Sichuan pepper. From China's south-western provinces, and quite unlike black or pink pepper — a refreshing citrus spice carrying that exhilarating tingling numbness, like warmth off bright sunshine. Its animalic depth softens the woods and the leather beneath.

Grasse iris and violet leaf. Orris root releases its delicate violet fragrance only after five years of drying and curing. Blended with the soft green of violet leaf, it makes an ambience both fierce and gentle, balanced against leather.
