Sour Diesel takes one of perfumery’s more provocative references and makes it wonderfully provocative.
The cannabis accord is not treated as a novelty effect, but as a complex green atmosphere: bitter, piney, resinous and narcotic, with the faint mulched volatility of crushed leaves and smoke settling in warm air. Beneath it runs the suggested shimmer of diesel, piquant and herbal rather than heavy, giving the fragrance its glint of petrolic charge.
Rhubarb cuts straight through the haze. Bright, tart and blush-coloured, it brings a sharp fruit acidity that prevents the composition from sinking into dazed languor. In perfumery, rhubarb is wonderfully malleable. It can suggest green apple, citrus, damp soil, strawberry and raw stalks snapped open at the stem. Here, its acerbic brightness lifts the cannabis accord and makes the whole structure feel more vivid.
Geranium adds a subtle rosy-green glow, while juniper berries sharpen the heart with their cool, aromatic bite. The result is bold and attention-grabbing, but not murky. Sour Diesel has a telluric ease, marrying iconic fruit and narcotic haze with surprising freshness. Defiant, piquant and oddly uplifting, it is one of Serviette’s most fascinating compositions.
