“I am all that has been, that is, and that will be. No mortal has yet been able to lift the veil that covers me.”
Attributed to the Temple of Neith at Sais, after Plutarch
Neith is one of the oldest deities in the Egyptian pantheon: a primordial creator who emerged from the waters of chaos before the world had shape or lineage. She owed nothing to anyone. She created by weaving, drawing existence into being on her divine loom and reweaving it each day in an act of continuous creation.
She was the mother of Ra, the sun god. She also created Apep, the serpent of chaos. Light and darkness both came from her.
Neith held contradiction without apology. Mistress of the Bow, Great Weaver, mother, judge, mediator, protector of the dead. She carried weapons in one hand and thread in the other. She was associated with spiders, fate and the intricate labour of preserving what mattered beyond death.
Composed by Bertrand Duchaufour for Neela Vermeire Créations, Neith feels less like an illustration of myth than an act of weaving in itself: a tapestry of smoke, resin, spice, wood, shadow and light drawn between two remarkable creative minds.
Perfumery is always a woven art. Materials cross and catch. One note tightens another. Incense becomes structure, spice becomes heat, woods become shadow, flowers become colour blooming in the dark. Here, Neela Vermeire’s vision and Bertrand Duchaufour’s composition meet like warp and weft, building something ancient-feeling, intricate and pulsing with life.
Black pepper ignites the opening before the fragrance descends into a deep, myrrh-laced incense drydown. Frankincense, oud, opoponax, cypriol, vetiver, cedarwood, labdanum and castoreum give Neith its ritual density, while rose and carnation move through the centre, flickers of colour within the smoke. Ambergris, vanilla and sandalwood bring a slow, resinous warmth to the base.
Deep, rich, spicy and heavily threaded with myrrh, Neith feels like incense rising from the edge of creation: radiant from darkness, rooted in shadow and impossible to fully unveil.
