This dense, tactile scent has been created by perfumer Spyros Drosopoulos, the multi-talented creative director and nose behind Baruti, based in the Netherlands. He is Greek and baruti translates as gunpowder, which gives us a good idea of how Spyros plays with materials, composing perfumes that explode across the senses.
Spyros has a roving artistic eye, taking his inspiration from compelling visuals, unusual materials, and an ability to create perfumes that have unnerving ambience. Minneapolis 5.3 composed for Berceuse is inspired by Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis, by gravel-voiced chanteur Tom Waits, taken from his 1978 album Blue Valentine.
The song is a vignette of longing, pulling memories and heartbreak in the half-light of a rickety apartment. It is fascinating source material and Waits’ voice is hypnotic in its soulful yearning.
Minneapolis 5.3 wears like a memory of classical perfume lost in strange glassy neon light. Syrupy vanilla, milky sandalwood, and the sweet after-float of benzoin married with white florals and the glowing tones of balms and spices and suede.
Minneapolis is dense chewy perfumery, an atmospheric exploration of a singularly fragmented voice communicating the serrated edges of love with an abrasive yet compelling personality.
