Ensang Noir is the deep dark heart of Bertrand Duchaufour’s L’Entropiste collection. Blooded, cut hearts have long been familiar symbols of shattered love and love lost to bitter-sweet memory. It is the passion of Sailor and Lulu in Lynch’s Wild at Heart or Isabelle Adjani, cradling the head of her lover La Môle in La Reine Margot, her white gown and hands drenched in his blood. Enrobed in red.

The red rose in Ensang Noir proves again that there can never be enough rose perfumes in the world. The olfactive complexity of The Queen of Flowers offers up a multitude of possibilities. There is a dense mantling to the opening of the perfume, roses simmered in a robust red wine, the tannic bite of lees apparent in added cassis and coriander. Bertrand uses an unusual cucumber note to add a cleansing aqueous as the powerful aldehyde-dipped roses surge out of the heart with peony and creamy magnolia.

The base notes are magnificent, wreaths of incense and sweet opoponax resin combine with tar-edged birch and patchouli; everything swirling and dissipating in the ecclesiastical chambers of a mourning heart. Bertrand saves one more surprise for the final stages, a lick of darkening caramel that lacquers and mulls the scented endgame of Ensang Noir. He is often referred to as the Master of Incense and this beautiful perfume is a statement of his distinguished skill and imagination in the creation of atmospheric antechambers of scented mystery.
