L'ENTROPISTE

"Entropy, a universal law that drives imbalance and leads to chaos, has become the core principle of my creations. I deliberately introduce imbalance to initiate dynamics. Harmony emerges from unexpected contrasts and a deliberate tension between the forces of the scents I work with."

Bertrand Duchaufour

Entropy is defined as the tendency toward chaos. It's a provocative reference for a perfume brand, but then L’Entropiste is not your average perfume line but a collection of erudite and dazzling compositions by Master Perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour, one of the most painterly and gifted creators in contemporary perfumery.

Founded only recently in 2025, L’Entropiste is a fitting setting for Bertrand Duchaufour’s work. If it seems surprising that a collection so closely aligned with his sensibility has emerged only now, it also makes a certain sense: he has always been something of a lone wolf, a creator who, while content to compose for other houses, collaborate or mentor others, has been equally happy to explore the hinterlands of materials and aroma chemistry, seeking balance in the malleability and dynamics of olfactive creation. His finest work reveals details that echo beyond the expected, tangible parts.

Over the years Bertrand has demonstrated an ability to awaken perfumed wanderlust with his work, be it through the intricate biography of an ingredient, or journeys to places like Bhutan, Mali, Rajasthan, Antarctica and his beloved Paris. One of the key elements of his work is the transformation and distillation of moments. He is known as a master of incense and indeed Avignon and Kyoto for Comme des Garcons are considered masterpieces of the genre. His use of vanilla, iris, violet, quality gourmand notes and oud are equally impressive. With L’Entropiste, he seems to have reached a point where beauty resides in fracture, coalescence and intimate decay.

There is sublime portraiture and avant garde innovation in the perfumes. They are the work of a perfumer working at the height of his powers. Obsessive quietude has always been a feature of his work, an ability to harmonise and deconstruct. Balance is not a static concept but something that moves and evolves.

There is always profound beauty in Bertrand’s work, and with L’Entropiste he is creating perfumes that oscillate between stasis and abandonment. The use of lacteous notes, milk, rice and almonds is striking, along with white musks, air, metals, air, snow, tea and his love for tuberose and dried fruit. Despite the Master of Incense moniker, Bertrand has a profound understanding of the particular tropes of a gamut of fragrance styles, from bold fougères and the female chypré counterpoint, radiant indolic florals, roses, vanilla, oud and was really one the first to demonstrate how grown up and sensual gourmand compositions could really be.

L’Entropiste flirts with minimalism in the rarified assembly of concepts and notes, scents with expanses of glass and spaces that decry embellishment, offering left field but deeply stratifying views of surroundings, notes like precisely directed light, only revealing what is necessary for impact and yet somehow suggesting much more.
