The name Silk Road echoes romantically with ancient history, stories of trade and the connecting of civilisations, of peoples, the transporting of precious textiles, porcelain, tea, spices and manuscripts. The Silk Road opened up the east, China, Japan and Korea, allowing a mutually beneficial flow of goods from cities like Constantinople (now Istanbul) and Venice, enriching the coffers of merchants at either end of the routes. In keeping with the locales, various routes and romanticism, perfumer Frank Voelkl has conjured up a vast airy composition that blows across the skin, snagging at the senses.
The west discovered tea through trade routes and English and Dutch trading companies, so it is an appropriate aromatic top note with a dash of lemon, fragrantly brewed and warm, this allows time for the main player to emerge, an elegantly appointed wine accord with gooseberry and pomegranate facets, blended perfectly with the altar riches of frankincense and bitter myrrh. Clove and rose deepen the fermentation vibe of the wine and a surprising use of sesame adds a unique smeared nuttiness and milky comfort to proceedings.
Woods, patchouli, benzoin resin, sparkling vetiver and the herbaceous evergreen scent of cypress. These base notes firmly anchor Silk Road to the skin, creating a long-lasting impression of olfactive terrain, a journey of scented intent, punctuated by night fires to keep warm, the dry heat of the day, and a wine accord that is nothing short of bacchanalian.
