As the name suggests Fjord 29 is cold, glacial with a huge whoosh of glittering, breathtaking materials that open like water, air and ice simultaneously.
Nata has created a crisp invigorating twist on an aquatic chypré, with seaweed absolute and sea salt blowing in on fresh air through fir trees, scented with chill mint, lavender and fern. Clary sage adds a musky green leather note while oakmoss, patchouli and aromatic cedarwood anchor this remarkable perfume and provide a stable, long lasting fade.
Fjord 29 has an intriguing gelid vibe, like the scent of Antarctic ice cores, those long tubes of ice extracted to help scientists study millennia of global atmospheric change. They contain captured bubbles of atmosphere, trapped gases, volcanic ash, algae, dust and marine aerosols.
There is now the Ice Memory Foundation, a sanctuary for the multitude of cores holding onto their secrets. Fjord 29 suggests the mystery and isolation of these cores, mingled with bright sun glinting off ice and crashy blue seas. A hint of brittle freezer air and ice on aluminium floats under the marine brilliance.
The drydown is impressive, notes ebb and flow, spike and glisten, dip and soar. Each material has a role to play and has been integrated and delineated with attention to effect and beauty. Fjord 29 is a ingenious and significant addition to the Sentire x Sainte Cellier collection.
