The limestone is rich in calcium and phosphate. Acidic water has been dissolving it ever since, releasing minerals into the soil that feed the grass that gives the region its name.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003ePoa pratensis, Kentucky bluegrass, with its slight blue cast at the seed heads, only thrives there because of what the ancient sea left behind. The horses that run the Kentucky Derby have strong bones because of the calcium in the grass. The bourbon Kentucky is famous for is sweetened by the iron filtered out of the limestone water. The whole identity of the state comes out of the floor of a vanished ocean.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eDawn Spencer Hurwitz's composition holds that landscape in skin temperature. Wet grass and violet leaf open with the dew of pasture before sunrise. Lavender drifts in like a herbaceous breeze. Orris adds a powdery elegance, then settles into the damp mineral pull of oakmoss and the hay-tinged earthy warmth of vetiver.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eBluegrass is also the name of a genre of music few other countries could produce. Bill Monroe, from Rosine, Kentucky, named his band the Blue Grass Boys in the late 1930s after his home state, and the genre took its name from his band. What Monroe invented was a fusion of Appalachian folk traditions inherited from Irish, Scottish and English settlers, African American blues and gospel (he specifically credited the Black miner and fiddler Arnold Schultz as a formative influence) and the high lonesome vocal sound of mountain singing. Like the grass, the music could only have come from there.
