Imperia La Divina (1486-1512) was the first Roman courtesan to achieve celebrity status, but it was her intelligence, charm, and character that escalated her fame. She was known to pose in her window, prompting onlookers to gaze upon her while they walked down the street, and she accepted work only when she would receive large sums of money and a "good spirit” –– her number one requirement –– in return. Many legends surround her death, but her funeral entailed the largest party Rome had ever seen, financed by one of her lovers, Agostino Chigi.
